Were demolished buildings different from the start?
Street view archives let you see a building in its prime. Did buildings that were later demolished already look different from the ones still standing?
The idea
Street view archives go back far enough that you can pull a building’s photo from its best years. So: take buildings that have since been demolished and buildings that are still standing, grab both at their prime, and compare vision features. Were the demolished ones already different back then? Or do the two groups look the same, and demolition came down to something the image never shows?
Open questions
- How to match pairs fairly (age, district, building type) so the comparison isn’t rigged?
